We are all hardwired to be aware of danger…. Our literal survival depends on it and we would never want this amazing alert system to leave us.
The issue often comes down to our danger signal being tuned to a historic frequency rather than an updated current alert system. Through necessity, each of us have learned to watch out for that creepy person, or the way mum or dad looked when they were angry or to turn and walk the other way when the bully stared in our direction.
We need to recalibrate our wonderful alert systems to understand what is truly a threat for us as skilled adults, capable of so many amazing options to protect ourselves and those we love.
One wonderful Pathways client spoke of their alert system like ringing the alarm at the fire station, jumping into the truck and immediately racing away before understanding the real danger in their current adult world. Coupled with this, is a funny story of Carina’s Nanna, who had to evacuate her retirement village to alarms and firetrucks arriving. Someone had burned the toast….
So, consider when your alarm goes off can you stop, pause and check….. is it a raging fire and you need all of your survival skills or did someone burn the toast? Realign your own danger signals with what is truly in front of you and trust in yourself to deal with it.
Another insightful client said….. give yourself time to equalise, don’t come up too fast.
We know this retuning requires time and testing…. That’s perfect…. Each time you will learn more and more about how to react and what options you may in front of you.
A book that was shared with us recently by a client is My Brain is a Home by Orlanda Bettison. Written for kids and such a simple way to explain your alarm system.
