I recently attended a workshop on EMDR 2.0 and whilst already incorporating both EMDR and intensive EMDR into our work, I wanted to share with you all a synopsis of the training and what I have learned to better support you.
EMDR or Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing is an evidence based approved trauma treatment and in my opinion one of the most efficient, kindest and safest models that we can apply to highly distressing experiences. EMDR was developed by Dr Francine Shapiro in the late 80s for the treatment of PTSD and has evolved to be utilised across a broad range of psychological presentations as well as targeted interventions for particular issues such as anger, addiction and pain.
EMDR 2.0 is the next evolution with the core work being undertaken in The Netherlands. The treatment has significant analytical underpinning and a number of published research papers. I was very fortunate to attend the workshop with Prof. Ad de Jongh and Dr. Suzy Matthijsen who both head clinics in The Netherlands utilising EMDR 2.0.
So, what is EMDR 2.0
It is an intensive version of EMDR, comprising of multiple sessions in a short timeframe along with the applications of an increased level of mental or cognitive activity (in addition to the eye movements) to assist in faster processing.
What’s the impact?
It means that processing of highly distressing memories can be undertaken in a shorter time frame with the minimal level of prolonged exposure.
It is that simple?
There is always detail, however with the correct preparation and trust and safety within the therapeutic environment, EMDR 2.0 already displays exceptional results for those with long term trauma impacts.
